This was my first solo album, recorded on an analog Roland VS880EX recording system at home in Camps Bay in 2002, which limited me to four tracks and a tiny 5cm wide screen. At the time I couldn't afford to go digital; the computers and recording software were just too expensive.

The songs were all written by me and I play all the instruments. The drums are largely programmed on a Boss DR670 drum machine, which gives them that awful unwavering clunky beat.

Beverly Rinkwest sings the lead vocal on Shooting the Breeze, and in fact it was one of the songs (the other was Jazzman) that we played at the 2002 Old Mutual Jazz Competition. We got as far as the regional finals, where I also got to meet Judith Sephuma who was one of the judges. On the strength of the Jazz Competition Beverly and I decided to go big and record a proper CD, and this was the result.

In May 2003 I went to the New Orleans Jazz Festival and on my way home I popped into ASCAP in Nashville and played this CD to one of the vice-presidents. His advice was to have it properly recorded by professional musicians, which I subsequently set about doing (see the albums It Must Be Friday Night and Silent Moments).

Friday Night and Love Is A Dream remain two of my all-time favourites. Love Is A Dream, Friday Night, Seagull and The Stiff have all been rerecorded on subsequent albums of mine.
