Graphic Equaliser
This album was recorded during the light lockdown of late 2021, so I'll Be Around is supposed to cheer you up a bit. It was inspired by my eternal muse, Where's Pookie Now, who is partly fantasy and partly real. Meanwhile, a great deal of skulduggery was being uncovered by the Zondo Commission in our Banana Republic. Global Warming is a nod towards the real thing, which worries me greatly. My contribution to "motivational music" is Hard Enough!, which includes a verse on open water swimming, of which I have considerable experience.
As a huge fan of David Gilmour I decided to have a go at Breathe, Pink Floyd's 1973 gem. Alas, David can sing somewhat higher than I can, and I confess that I have battled to do it justice.
I have included remakes of some of my older songs. For Friday Night I took the original master from 2004 and over-dubbed myself singing the lead, with Beverly Rinkwest (who sang lead on the original) singing the harmonies. The bass guitar, played by Alvin Hendricks, is a masterpiece, not to mention Davie Goldberg on piano!
Home On The Hill is one of my personal favourites from 2007, and Put Your Lights On is a cover I did initially in 2009. These two new versions were recorded by my friend Eric Newton who also plays lead and bass guitars; Simon Sloane plays real live drums, and I play acoustic rythme guitar. Note that Friday Night, Home On The Hill, and Put Your Lights On all have live drums: what a difference!
Thanks as usual to my best friend and partner Mel Williams (Pookie!) for endless encouragement and support, especially for listening patiently to the endless initial mixes!
*****
I mostly play my Taylor steel string acoustic, with occasional lead breaks on my Aria nylon string acoustic. My bass is a Fender Jazz Bass played through a SansAmp DI box. The drums (on my recordings) come out of a Boss drum box, which was nursed back to life after collapsing during my last album. (The replacement Alesis drum machine had teething problems!) Everything else is from a Roland JUNO-D keyboard.
I wrote all the songs with the following exceptions:
- Breathe from Pink Floyd [1973].
- Put Your Lights On by Everlast, off the Santana album Supernatural [1999]
I also do all the playing and singing, with the exception of tracks 1, 3 and 5, where I had a little help from my somewhat more accomplished friends.
The album was recorded in my home studio in Somerset West between August 2021 and February 2022. Tracks 1, 3 and 5 were recorded in various other studios at various other times.
